| Bagni di Lucca is only 152m above sea level, yet looks almost alpine as the tree clad mountains rise around it; hence its nickname âThe Switzerland of Tuscanyâ, and with its mild, climate and renowned thermal springs it has always been a popular destination.
Royalty and nobility from all over Europe stayed here (âin Bagni di Lucca one is knee deep in royal highnessesâ according to a C.19th reporter!) as did many famous writers and musicians, including Byron, Shelley, the Brownings, Puccini, Liszt, Strauss and Paganini. The town is thus unusually rich in history and architecture, and much of the beauty and elegance of this bygone era remains in the villas, palazzos and parks, including the first Casino in Europe, now beautifully restored and containing the tourist information office (very handy - only 3 minutes walk from Villa Rosalena!). A very pleasant day can be spent just strolling around this charming historic town, ice cream in hand! There are many good restaurants, trattorias, pizzerias, bars and pastry shops in town, all within walking distance of Villa Rosalena. The people of Bagni di Lucca are very friendly and hospitable, being well used to welcoming foreign visitors, with many speaking some English. The thermal spa complex offers a range of treatments, therapies or just pampering and includes two superb natural steam grottoes: see www.termebagnidilucca.it. The town has a large open air thermal public swimming pool (also smaller indoor pool for winter) in the grounds of Villa Ada, and a tennis club by the river (Mirafiume). Within the Comune of Bagni di Lucca are many enchanting, picturesque hill villages, such as Montefegatesi. At over 800 metres above sea level, on a rocky spur, Montefegatesi looks straight out of Lord of the Rings! Follow the meandering cobbled lanes of this thriving village to the reach a viewing platform with amazing 360 degree mountain views and a surprise of a huge monument to the Italian writer Dante. Lucca (24km: 27 minutes by train) Most visitors fall in love with Lucca, enjoying walking around soaking up the charm and atmosphere of its narrow lanes and grand piazzas, virtually traffic free within the walls. Lucca is enclosed by 4km of uniquely intact sixteenth century walls and ramparts, which have preserved everything within the walls in full medieval and renaissance splendour, keeping modern eyesores firmly beyond the walls. Villa Rosalena is an historic nineteenth century villa overlooking Ponte a Serraglio bridge in the heart of the unspoiled Tuscan spa town of Bagni di Lucca. From the unrivalled setting of its terraces Villa Rosalena offers spectacular views along the River Lima of the former Royal Casino, Villas, spas and chestnut clad mountains. It is a haven of beauty and tranquillity, yet restaurants, bars, shops and the tourist information office are all only few minutes walk. The owner has many years experience working in Five Star hotels and offers quality, style and service on a more personal and relaxing scale at Villa Rosalena. Villa Rosalena is just under an hourâs drive from Pisa airport, and only 20 minutes from Lucca. Bagni di Lucca is easily reached by public transport, with good buses and trains from Pisa and Lucca, and connections to Florence and the coast at Viareggio. The railway station is less than a mile away (free pick up form the railway station) All rooms have ensuite shower rooms with luxury shower, toilet, bidet, washbasin, mirror and shaverpoint. Rooms are well equipped with comfy mattresses, wardrobes, bedside tables and lamps, seating, mirrors and hairdryers, etc. Housekeeping is provided on a daily basis. There are four guest rooms at Villa Rosalena, coloured by some of our favourite things! Cioccolato has a chocolate and cream colour scheme, with three windows, one of which is a full length French window with front facing views. Cioccolato can be made up as a double or twin. Vino Rosso has a red wine and gold colour scheme with a wrought iron sleigh bed. It has front facing views from both the bedroom and bathroom. Vino Bianco has a white and gold colour scheme with a modern four poster style double bed and a side facing view from both the bedroom and bathroom. Gelato is decorated in vanilla with a hint of neapolitan! It has a side facing view and is entered from its own lobby through a terracotta brick arch. It is standard size room, not as large as the other rooms. Gelato can be made up as a twin or a double. Room rates include breakfast for two. A full week (7 nights) is offered at a reduced rate. Family rates, extra beds and single occupancy reduction are also available. |

During the summer months cool off or splash about in the 15ft circular above ground pool. The garden and terraces provide seating in sun and shade surrounded by mediterranean plants and herbs. Depending on the season, help yourself to the fruits of the garden, including grape vines, figs, persimmon, walnuts and hazelnuts.
