Area Description
The Bed & Breakfast "Palazzo Verone" is situated in the ancient medieval village of Pontone di Scala, on the magnificent Amalfi Coast. In "The Valley of The Mills", among lemon and vineyard terraces descending to the sea, Palazzo Verone floats between the sky and the sea, in deep tranquil silence and peace. Within the immediate area, you can enjoy many cultural, artistic and natural sites.

In a few minutes you can be in the ancient Republic of Amalfi, the elegant hillside town of Ravello or the enchanting sea side town of Positano with its "Dolce Vitae". A little bit further, are other very interesting world famous sites: Pompei and Mt. Vesuvio, Ercolaneum and Paestum, easily reached by sea or land.

From Pontone's main square, for the physically fit and adventurous, ancient cobbled stairways and paths, still used by the locals, lead to the "Pathways of the Gods" which overlooks the Amalfi Coast. Or to the "Valle delle Ferriere", a unique "Natural Reserve" with a tropical ambience, coves and breathtaking waterfalls. A very rare and ancient plant of the pre-glacial age: the "Woodwardia Radicans" a bulbiferous fern is found here thanks to a micro-climate (warm-humid) that allows it to survive. The Valle delle ferriere is protected by a conservation organisation the "Corpo forestale di Stato".

Description
Palazzo Verone is an historical house of medieval origin, evidenced by the beautiful frescos painted on its walls dating back to the seventeen century ( mentioned in: Touring Club Italiano). It lies in the medieval village of Pontone, located between the towns of Amalfi and Ravello. From every balcony and window you have a breathtaking panoramic view of the Amalfi Coast, the Gulf of Salerno from Paestum to Cape Licosa, the imposing "Villa Cimbrone" of Ravello and the terraced hills of the "Valley of the Mills".

The Palace was owned by the influential and illustrious Verone family at the end of the XVIII century. The head of the family, Giovanbattista Verone, was the mayor of the village of Pontone. The Verone's were cross town rivals of another family, the D'Afflitto's, owners of what now are the ruins of the ancient Basilica of Saint Eustace, in Minuta. According to historical sources, the total destruction of this Basilic is attributed to the Verone family in a struggle for local political power.

Another interesting Verone family tale is depicted in the two oval frescos painted in the gateway of the palace, the first depicting skeleton figures and the second, enchained brigants. It's a curious story of a "miracle", thanks to which the Verone family was saved by prayer from attack by brigands for the intercession of a purgatory souls' legion. It's a tale a ("fattariello") which the current owner and manager of the Bed & Breakfast, Michele Criscuolo, deciphered details from local historical records of the time. Michele is always happy to further flesh out this fascinating tale for his guests.

About the owner:

"Life is the art of meeting" said the famous Brazilian poet and writer Vinicius De Moraes. I whole heartedly embrace this sentiment. I'm a passionate musician and I delight in writing songs to share with my friends when we meet at the parties I organize at the Villa. One of these songs' lyric says: "Che meraviglia svegliarsi a Pontone....How wonderful it is to wake up in Pontone". That's a song whose inspiration I found one day while looking down from a window of my house, appreciating the amazingly sensuous, expansive view. My wish is to share this song with you while tasting together a good glass of red wine, after which you too, can appreciate this same deep inspiration!
See you soon. Michele Criscuolo
