| Silves is just a short drive away. It is situated above the fertile valley, and gives stunning views of the area. Furthermore, it has culture, shops, entertainment and a range of fine dinning.
Although the Romans initially build a castle here, it was under the Arabs that the city really flourished and a visit to the Moorish castle is a must. This imposing sandstone castle has done duty as a Christian fortress and more recently a jail! It is the biggest castle in the Algarve and there are superb views of the town and countryside from the massive ramparts. Plus there are impressive vaulted Moorish cisterns inside. Step back in time as you walk along the streets of the old 'almedina', which are still laid out as they were in medieval times. There are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants to take a refreshing break in and absorb the delightful town’s atmosphere. Fresh fish and shellfish are high on the menu and there are also many restaurants serving international cuisine. The city’s bourgeois architecture reflects Silves’ reputation a centre of culture in Moorish Al-Gharb, home of poets, orators and historians. Silves still enjoys this cultural heritage and there are various festivals and concerts throughout the year, catering for lovers of music, poetry and wine. For those wanting more history, other points of interest include the city cathedral which is built on the site of a mosque and the City Museum. Opened in 1990 the museum is an interesting mix of Stone and Iron Age tools, Roman artefacts, surgical instruments dating from the 5th – 7th centuries and an impressive Moorish well. There is also the award winning Cork museum which explains the importance of cork to the city. Silves has many other little hidden gems waiting to be discovered such as the ‘Cruz de Portugal’ – an ornate 16th Century granite cross, the 16th Century bridge over the Arade River, numerous interesting churches and even a Jewish Quarter. But if it’s shopping you’re after, Silves has a number of boutiques and specialist shops, plus there are gift and souvenir shops, traditional pottery, wicker work, embroidered linens and jewellery. The stunning countryside surrounding Silves is the epicentre of Portugal’s orange growing industry but almond, carob and fig trees are also grown, adding to the tranquil charm of the area. This area is typically Portuguese and short drives will take you through many small villages with whitewashed walled houses, together with the characteristic blue doors and windows and ornate chimneys. There are many golf courses in the region, the closest being within walking distance of the new 5 Star Pestana Silves Golf Course or driving distance to Carvoeira Pestana Golf Course. The balance is due 8 weeks before arrival. all deposits are non refundable. All rentals - the balance is to be paid 8 weeks before arrival. A security deposit of £200 is payable before arrival. The security deposit will be refunded in full within 14 days after departure if the property has been left in an appropriate condition. The quoted rates includes maid service with regular change of sheets & towels and complimentary welcome basket including wine and food on arrival. The rental includes preparation of the villa also cleaning on departure and heating and/or air conditioning. All bed linen and bath towels are provided.
