| Loule is an active market town with some remains of an Arab castle dating back to the 12th Century. Like most other towns in the Algarve, most of the older potentially interesting buildings were destroyed in the earthquake in 1755, but there are still cobbled streets and characteristic houses waiting to be discovered.
The market hall, with its classic Moorish red onion dome, is home to the Saturday market which is a ‘must see’ for its array of fresh fish, fruit and vegetables. There are also local artisans producing copperware, leather, cane, lace and wood products. The annual Carnival held towards the end of February and is considered to be one of the best in Portugal, attracting thousands of visitors from across the Algarve. Based on religious origins, the parade of floats winds its way to the hilltop church to the west of the town is built on the site of a 16th Century chapel.
